Winds of Wishes

March in New England can be quite windy and even chilly as the earth thaws and buds
remember their way of rebirth for us all to see again and again each year as if it was
a unique, spectacular occurrence. And yet it is normal and natural. The wind is Mother
Nature breathing and stirring up the energies of the atmosphere.

So it is with our own breath. Show your child how you can slow down by being present
and breathe to tap into our inner energies. Use your own moment-by-moment
awareness to offer your spontaneous availability.

Try this simple, joyful practice. Place some flower petals in the palms of your hands;
then, take a deep breath, make a wish and blow the petals into the wind. See how far
they will go.

Through this method, you are teaching yourself, first and foremost, how to be BOTH
spontaneous and available. You do this by recognizing the fact that you can generate
emotions of pleasure and peacefulness by choice.

Teach your child to connect with you for the purpose of calming down together.
We know from neuroscience when you exhale, as in blowing out a candle, the area of
the brain called the medulla oblongata triggers the “Relaxation Response” a process
developed by Harvard cardiologist, Herbert Benson, MD. who wrote the New York
Times best selling book by the same name. A must read if you want to be convinced of
the beneficial effects for adults and children. The positive results will be fast and
effective.

Social Media is Not Causing Your Child to Succeed Socially

By Dr. Roxanne Daleo

The number one factor that contributes to your child’s healthy self-esteem and industry
is the development of a growth mindset. That means, the more you can give your child
ways to practice flexible thinking and adaptability, the faster your child will build skills in
social-emotional intelligence which leads to a sense of competence.
It all starts in the home environment, you be the energy that generates a supportive,
positive, enthusiasm for learning and life. You introduce your child to the ways they can
become competent, flexible, industrious and adventuresome. Talk about the ability to
see things from a new perspective and different viewpoints; It can be as simple as
playing a game and seeing several steps ahead of time.
PREPARED AND FLEXIBLE EMPOWERS
A growth mindset is both preparedness to the expected and openness to the
unexpected. Show your child how to problem-solve using two different moves, like in a
game. Demonstrate how to see different vantage points. Here’s how. Imagine a tree
with two large branches growing outward from its trunk. You might want to point to a
tree outdoors or make a drawing while sitting at the kitchen table. Now, let’s say, the
branch to the left we’ll call “A” and the branch to the right we’ll call “B.” You have the
ability to choose. For example, say you are planning to ask a friend to join you to do
something, if he says “yes” that’s “A” and you know what you’ll do. But if he says “no”
that’s “B” then you have plan out what to do instead and still feel OK and in charge of
your energy and emotions so that you can keep your inner balance. When you have a
growth mindset, you are prepared, ahead of time, with both “A” and “B” decision. This
way you feel more control. You don’t have to let the outside world upset you. You have
enough awareness to know both are OK.
ADJUSTABILITY AND IMPROVISATION BUILDS CONFIDENCE
We also have to be able to move forward without knowing everything ahead of time.
When we have a growth mindset to “think on the spot” “think out of the box” we become
better able to adjust or improvise. To improvise means “to make do from whatever is
available.” A fun way to demonstrate improvisation is by exploring. You can comb a
beach for drift wood and other objects and create a sculpture. Or you could make
something new at home with left over craft materials, fabrics or electronics. Bringing
new energy and the creative forces to what is available builds confidence to find ways
out of a sticky situation or to just discover interests.
INNER DIALOGUE PREDICTS
When you can talk to you child about the effort he is putting into a task and you promote
the growth mindset with your encouraging words, then your child will use those words to
speak to himself. This is powerful because inner dialogue predicts esteem and resolve
to never give up on yourself. You can say things like “if at first you

don’t succeed, try, try again!” or “You are becoming a person who isn’t afraid of giving
your best, your effort is recognized.” Now ask you child to affirm this by saying to
themself: “I am becoming a person who does my best every time!”

BEING CALM TOGETHER FOSTERS EMOTIONAL STABILITY
Every day make time to be calm and stay quiet together with your child. When you
unplug from the noise of devices and pressure of the outside world, your child
learns to appreciate your presence and his own stillness as the best way to tap inner
resources for peace. Share deep desires of the heart. Ask: “What makes you excited?
or What do you know comes easily for you to do? These are your innate talents.
Everyone has them, it’s up to you to recognize them and grow them with a grow
mindset. That means practicing and building these skills.”
The most valuable gift you can give is your acknowledgement that you see you child
“becoming” the best version of themselves, practicing new skills and developing a
growth mindset. We can’t know everything all at once, but your child can become
content to know they are already good enough.

Anxiety Coping Skills And How To Get Your Child To Sleep Well

By Dr. Roxanne Daleo
Do you find it difficult to help your child settled down, especially during the excitement of the holidays. Here are five steps to build self-reliance through awareness.
1.CHANGE YOUR CONVERSATION
Redirect your typical “Good night, go to sleep” conversation to open the mind by inspiring imagination with “Hey, I have a new idea for you to create your dreams. Dreams are movies of your mind. And you can do it right- I can show you how!”
2. BE FULLY PRESENT
Realize the energy you bring to the moment is felt by your child and can either make or break the outcome. This is why you being fully present to your child and not rushing away is critical to the exchange and a positive outcome. The most important knowledge you can give your child is self-knowledge. It is not a subject like Math or Science but “awareness”. Therefore, if you are intentional in being fully present, and you are calm, your child will be calm. You be still for a moment, let your child feel the peacefulness stillness you are holding within yourself. It is a sense of “all is well.” This is the most effective stress-reducer.
3. PROMOTE THE SELF-EMPOWERMENT MINDSET
Promote mastery with your power words, such as, “OK, You’re going to love this!” Your child is more likely to follow your suggestions. Your own belief and attitude will come through your words. Say to your child, “You have the ability to talk to yourself in a powerful way. What you tell yourself is important, it will lead you in that direction that makes you feel good or or it can take you down the drain! So be aware of your self-talk.
Tell yourself you are about to take three deep breaths and as you take the in breathe and the out breath allow yourself to settle down quietly. Allow your heart to become attentive to the sound of the breath. As you breathe in and breathe out slowly, become more aware of your quiet self. As you do, you are going to be more and more focused on creating a dream. And in the dream something will happen that will help you- so stay alert!”
4. USE A TEACHING TALE
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago in a far away place called the Pacific Island of Malaysia, there lived the Senoi tribe. And in this tribe was a family whose child had a hard time sleeping. So the parent told the child “ you have all the power that you could ever need within you-wherever you go and whatever you do, you can change your feelings using your breath.” “ But I’m afraid of falling off the mountain,” said the child.
“Remember, you are the dream maker, you can change the dream at any time. If there is something happening that feels unsettling, all you do is change the picture by telling yourself you are the director. See yourself become aware of your breathing, perhaps your breathing is fast at first but you can slow it down to nice and easy.” So the child took three deep breaths, in and out slowly. “Now, see the scene of falling turn into flying!
Change the frightening falling off a cliff into flying high over the mountains to land safely anywhere you want to go.” The child flew and flew all night until awakening in the morning feeling very good and pleased within.
5. TRANSMIT YOUR ENERGETIC POWER
Transit your positive energy of confidence to your child by saying, “the moment you remember you have the ability to become aware of your breathing (in this moment and this one, too) is the moment you discover another aspect of yourself- it is your inner self.
The feeling of calm is always deep within you. Practice often, just turn your attention away from the day and bring your awareness inward using your your breathing.
BREATHE. “You are a very powerful creator, you can create many fantastic movies that you’ll want to watch for a long time.Try it right now and tell me in the morning!” Your child will pull the bed covers up and soon fall happily and fast asleep.

Thanksgiving Storytelling Family Tradition

By Dr. Roxanne Daleo

“ …and that’s true love!” said my grandpa…
his voice made my mind conjure up the entire scene: I see it as if it were real, mom serving
dessert after a big Italian-American feast for Thanksgiving Day, always prepared with love by
my parents in what I believed to be our beautiful New Jersey home. But the fact is, it was only my grandfather’s voice coming from an audio cassette player. A tape I nearly tossed in the trash moments before to clear the clutter from my garage. So glad I have this priceless treasure today.

Through “imaging” you mentally “see.” Your brain takes the audio input of a voice and provides
you a “mental picture”. In this case, it pulled out a memory of the past and my brain served up a scene so vivid you relive it as if it were happening in the present. My grandfather’s philosophy
about true love were his words of wisdom I will treasure forever.

Your brain can also take an idea or visualization to create a future-self. Your brain can be directed using mental imagery which is really a kind of storytelling.

When you add the auditory aspect, such as a voice, you add a person’s energy because your voice is the blueprint of your soul. Listening to the sound of your own voice is a powerful way
to imprint and direct your subconscious mind to connect sound and image.

Add the background music and the brain automatically enhances the imagery experience as if it were real. The mind makes no distinction between real and imagined information; this is why using guided imagery narrations for relaxation are a powerful form of mind/body medicine.
Scientists are learning how we manipulate and examine pictures of the mind and develop
internal states of awareness, resilience and balance.

Many world cultures have been using the power of mental imagery in the form of storytelling.
Let’s look at the Native American culture specifically, they have been using the art of telling stories passed down from one generation to the next as their primary form of wisdom communication. Traditionally, Native Americans transmit by story their mythology, spiritual and historical understandings of themselves and the world in which they live to their children.
Storytelling creates the mental imagery in the minds and hearts of the young, that which elders did not want forgotten. In this way, the elders ensured young would not lose sight of their roots,
important knowledge that would allow them to live in harmony and cooperation with the natural world.

So this Thanksgiving why not try to capture more voices of the elders in your tribe, the seniors in your family. Allow them to pass on their words of wisdom to the children as part of the formal celebration for which we are giving thanks and deep appreciation. In this way, you can be sure
your children and their children have your family’s important knowledge through the beautiful storytelling tradition.

7 Keys to Cultivate Storytelling Family Tradition

1.Give your children and their children a beautiful way to honor their elders by asking
questions about their roots, heritage, country of origin and the ways of their people.

2.Use a recording device to capture and remember forever, the voices of the senior family
members and their words of wisdom.

3.Make the bedtime ritual include recounting meaningful memories you made this Thanksgiving
holiday..

4.Create a work of art. Draw, paint, sing a song or dance your newly realized wisdom tradition.

5. Each year collect keepsake photos, images and quotes in a box or a book.

6.Ask your child to express the kind of person they want to become; share the vision of a world they want to see and live in.

7.Have your child record their own voice to express their visions. Speak about appreciation, love and peace. Play this recording before sleep so the subconscious mind can bring good thoughts to every cell in your child’s body.

8.Mark your life with joy, gratitude and love in tangible ways this holiday season.

Anja Rozen, 13 yr. old student from Slovenia, winner of the Peace Art Poster explains her artwork and intention:
“My drawing symbolizes the land that binds us and unites us.
We are all connected to one another and the planet.
People are holding onto each other. If one lets go the rest of them would fall.
When people look at my poster I want them to think how much we are connected to people we might not even know. We are all members of the earth community and we need each other to survive. In addition, I want you to realize we need to respect the earth more and take better care of our planet. I believe only when there’s peace can nations and the whole world achieve political and economic stability as well as cultural growth. Thank you.”

Unlock the Healing Potential in Your Body

“Like a bend in the road ahead
Trust your path is a golden thread.”

Imagine a golden thread connecting you to what’s ahead with a feeling of curiosity! The
unknown and unseen does not have to be scary. Let’s teach our children and remind ourselves
we can stay with the discomfort for a moment instead of pushing it away.

Good mental health does not mean being happy all the time. Health: emotionally and mentally
means you can experience distress and depression without getting lost and having the emotions
get in the way of functioning well. The experience of unwanted emotions is a normal and natural
part of life.

When we make room for the unexpected and keep walking forward one step at a time, even
though we cannot see beyond the bend in the road, we teach ourselves that feelings are just
information. By accessing the information, we are better able to manage our emotions rather
than having emotions debilitate us.

Reduce Stress With the Daily Ritual of Passaggiata

Reduce Stress With the Daily Ritual of Passaggiata

The Italians have a tradition you can borrow but will you slow down to enjoy
the pace of a leisurely stroll called, passaggiata?

Passaggiata, even the language of the word itself slows us for the time-
honored ritual embraced by families in Italy. This walk does not require
wearing a pedometer or spandex- it’s not a jog; it’s a kind of a deliberate
meandering usually in the early evening.

When we release our inner urgency of “not enough time” or “too much to
do”, we can begin to de-clutter our thoughts. You are now deliberating
deciding what to focus on.

Take a deep breath. Become aware of your mind chatter. If you want to
calm yourself, bring your attention to the sun or the sky. You can shift your
frequency by shifting your focus. Frequency is energy, it can be felt. And
like a radio it broadcasts and it receives. Whatever you are thinking about
is translated into a feeling and then broadcast into the energy field around
you. Your children can pick up your vibes.

Let’s look to nature and observe the essence of passagiata. When I lived in
the seashore town of Rockport on Cape Ann, there was a public beach on
Front Street where you could sit, relax and watch seagulls bobbing on the
water all in a row. My friend Gregory, who spent years in Italy would say to
me, “they are enjoying passagiata” and we’d laugh!

For most modern families, the only time we may take a walk purely for
pleasure is perhaps, when we beach comb a beautiful shoreline.
Nevertheless, I have adapted the pace of passeggiata to reduce stress
and invite you to try it.

The 5 Keys To Activate Your Silent Power

The 5 Keys To Activate Your Silent Power

By Dr. Roxanne Daleo

Breathing is natural. It’s given to you the day you’re born. Without breath, you have no life.

But with breath, you have power! Everyone on the planet is given this gift. It’s yours… it’s the gift of life.

You’re breathing all the time, and yet you can forget that you are breathing. You can go through your day without awareness of breath – without awareness of your power. This is the gift, that your breath is a tool.

Discover how to use your gift, and you’ll know your self. When you know your self, you’ll know your power; a silent power.

You have the ability to use your breath with intention. Using the Breath of Intention changes everything. Let me explain…

I once heard a story of a sea captain who sailed around the world using just his breath to fill his sails.

If you have no breath, you cannot sail. If you cannot sail, you cannot move forward.  If you want to go anywhere, breathe… breathe deep to give wind to your sails.

Like the sea captain, breathe into your sails with all your might. Breathe with all your intention. Breathe with all your desire, passion and determination. You do this by holding within your mind and heart the picture of where you want to go.

You see? You’re creating all the time, whether you know it or not. So why not create intentionally? Why not use the power of intention, the breath of intention?

When you have no intention, it’s as if you’re lost. Like filling the sails of your boat, but your boat has no rudder, no way to navigate the seas. The rudder is what the captain uses to steer his boat. The rudder determines which direction your boat will sail. Do you understand? Lost intention is like going through your day – your life journey – without anything to give you direction.

Without a rudder, you will only flutter-

Without a sail, you’d surely fail.

With the two together: vision and desire, you can harness the wind and have direction.

You have the ability to create. You were born with it. So use your Breath of Intention – it’s natural; it’s your nature.

Unless you have a want – a desire – you cannot move forward. Although your desire is invisible, it has energy. Your thinking is the invisible force that fills the sails and moves your boat forward. Your thinking is powerful so pay attention to what you desire. Imagine it happening and the “feeling good” feeling of that desire. The joy of your heart uplifts your spirit. And when you picture your vision it pushes you forward. Remember, you are the creator, like the wind filling the sails in a boat, you are creating the force forward with your breath of intention.

To activate and energize your desire, use your Breath of Intention. You do this by holding the vision of what you desire as if you already have it. Feeling the happy feeling of having that vision NOW.

Your breath is constant; it’s a gift. Grab hold of it! Too many people lose focus.  Know that you can choose differently – it’s all in the rudder. You decide where you want to go. So ask yourself, “What do I want? What do I truly want?”

Remember: Breath is life, and what you decide to do with your life is up to you. No one can breathe for you! Remember: Treasures are hidden. But if you look deep enough, you’ll always find a treasure. Just be willing to look; be willing to try.

Five Keys to Activate Your Silent Power

Become aware.   Without awareness of your inner power and your breath of intention, you can blow as hard as you like, but you’ll only blow yourself in circles. Without a rudder, you go no where fast!

Make an Intention. Make a decision to focus on what you intend to do. Is it exercise more, eat less, paint a picture, create a sculpture, build something?

Perhaps, it is that you want to have the best “feeling good” feeling you can?

Become Fearless. Fear and doubt cancel out the breath of intention. Fear puts holes in your sails! Fear and intention can’t be mixed. If you hold onto your intention, you can access your power. And that intention, that power, has energy to activate your desire.

Become Responsible. Take responsibility for knowing the truth. This gives your vision life. You can hoist your sails and decide what you want. Breathe life into the sails of your intention.

Become A Creator. Someone who knows what they want and will use their gift.

Breathe life into your intention by feeling what it will feel like to be where you want to be. Feel the energy of intention. You activate intention with desire

and commitment to never give up on yourself.  When you activate commitment, you create more breath, more energy, more power. Then, this silent power in you gives you the feeling as if that which you intend is already done.

5-G Is Bad News: We Are Being Radiated And it’s Making Our Kids Crazy!

In this era of fast-o, whiz-bang, I want in, immediate gratification; how do we help our
youth help themselves tune-in, slow down and know themselves?

We are energy beings . Our energy is charged by light. The sun has a solar code that
activates your body’s cells. This light therapy called photobiomodulation is essential for
good health. Your cells need light to regenerate.

When you use 5-G mobile devices, you drain your body of natural energy, deplete your
immune system, increase inflammation and pain. Not to mention the distractibility factor
which is causing our kids to go crazy! Crazy, unruly behaviors and emotions.

We must get back to humanizing childhood. Take back the afternoon to just be carefree.
lighthearted, content… Idyll in the woods, swing in a hammock, unplug. Unless we
increase our children’s tolerance for stillness, their lives will only become a ball of stress
without relief.

Kids ask me for help to manage their stress which comes in many symptoms:
migraines, stomach aches, muscle soreness, irritability, angry outbursts and more.

Yet, it is our human impatience to think that whatever we can do to heal ourselves must
happen instantly is a mistake. The body doesn’t work that way. We need to “adopt the
pace of nature: her secret is patience” says Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I know of way you can use your body’s own energy to activate healing and repair.
It’s a simple as putting on a bandaid. It’s non-invasive, non-drug, and a no brainer.
When your body is stimulated with low level light and wave lengths of light, muscles can
improve giving you more energy which leads to better performance and peace of mind.

Ask Me Anything and I’ll give you the pathway to solutions.

Aloha!

By Dr. Roxanne Daleo

In honor of Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) Heritage
Month, I offer the value of a closer look at another’s cultural custom which can level-up
our daily lives in unexpected, positive ways.

I recently learned that the traditional Hawaiian greeting, aloha, means more than hello.
It reflects a way of life and an attitude of well-being by natives for thousands of years.
Originally, it was reserved for greeting loved ones by rubbing noses and the inhaling
each other’s breath. The word aloha translates as alo meaning in the presence of, and
ha meaning breath of life. In short, to live with the spirit of aloha is to live with an inner
knowledge to be loving and genuine in all interactions with all relations- people, animals,
and nature because all of life is connected.

Think of this next time you say, hello. Silently acknowledge, the breath of life in me and
the breath of life in you is the same breath shared by all living things. Aloha!
